If you already rushed out to purchase a Magic Trackpad or one of the brand new iMacs Apple announced on Tuesday morning, then it’s time to do the Software Update dance. The company has rolled out a pair of updates for Mac OS X 10.6.4 and Mac OS X 10.6.4 Server installations running on the new desktop models, as well as software updates for those who want to use the Magic Trackpad with their existing Mac.

The Mac OS X 10.6.4 update for the mid-2010 iMac resolves compatibility and performance-related graphics issues, improves compatibility with large-format SDXC memory cards, and adds support for Apple’s new Bluetooth Magic Trackpad. Apple has just posted its Q3 earnings for fiscal year 2010 and the company has once again bested its own records, this time reporting an astounding $15.7 billion in revenue and a net quarterly profit of $3.35 billion.

In April, Apple launched its “magical and revolutionary” new device, the iPad. Just 28 days later, it seemed the real magic was how Apple sold more than a million devices in that time period. As I write this at the end of May, iPads are in short supply in most Apple stores. Here in the New York City area, I couldn’t find a single iPad 3G, and there were only a few lower-end Wi-Fi models to be found.

Apple’s sales record here is even more impressive if you factor in that iPad is a new class of device, somewhere between the phones and computers that most consumers understand. It’s also a category of device that’s vexed every vendor who’s tried to enter this space over the last decade.

So how did Apple do it? Why did Apple succeed where no one else has and how did they do it so quickly?

The answer is, it took a decade of education and teaching. The key to Apple’s success is that the company often takes the time to explain things to the consumer that no other vendor bothers to do. By keeping a laser focus on key features and introducing them one at a time over a period of years, Apple taught and evangelized everything the consumer needed to know to understand the iPad from day one. The iPad does many things, but is it a cannibal? Is a revolution in computing taking place right before our eyes? Based on a new report which shows thatApple’s iPad is now selling a greater pace than Macs, something is definitely amiss in the computing world.

It appears that Apple is selling an estimated 200,000 iPads per week compared to “only” 110,000 Macs. Today Mike Abramsky, an analyst with RBC Capital Markets, reports that iPad sales now only behind those of the iPhone 3GS in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2010. 

According to Abramsky, “Retail store checks in mid-May show widespread iPad stockouts at Apple retail stores and Best Buy. (More than 25 percent) of Apple stores have only selected Wi-Fi iPads (3G sold out) and are allocating to waiting lists).”

When it comes to international orders, Abramsky suggests Apple has pre-sold about 600,000 units in the 9 countries slated for the May 28 international release, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Span, Switzerland and the U.K.

So for some reason your hands went crazy and click-happy. They somehow dragged your Iphoto to the trash and deleted it. Oh wait. No, you were trying to play techno-geek and fiddle with your applications and somehow Iphoto is missing. What to do. What to do. Well, if you’re smart — you’ll have the CDs. No wait, but you lost them during the move. So what now? Hopefully you have Time Capsule or some form of backup external drive like My Book or something of the sort. OK, so you don’t. No what? Is all hope lost? Besides pleading your case at the Genius Bar, here is another spot you can go to.

Remember how, back on Windows, you used to use the Win key and the Control key quite often? Well, on OS X, the Command key is your best friend.

There are two Command keys, one each side of the spacebar. You should find them easy to reach with your thumbs while typing.

Mac OS X is stuffed full of keyboard shortcuts – quick ways to get things done without taking your hands off the keyboard. The vast majority of them are done by holding down Command with your thumb while tapping another key with a finger.

Some of these shortcuts are universal: Command+S always saves what you’re working on. Command+Q always quits the app you’re working with. Command+N usually opens a new document; Command+O usually allows you to browse to a particular document so that you can open it in the current application.

Even though macs are known for their stability, sometimes the applications on them are not. Iphoto is no exception and it can be very frustrating when you’re working on something and then FLASH!–It’s gone. Hopefully you don’t lose any data, but what do you do when you can’t get it back up to stay and it keeps crashing? Here are two methods you can try out. Trash the Plist File

What is the Plist File?

Every application on your Mac has a plist file. It records certain User choices.Iphoto plist remembers the lcoation of the library, background color, autosplitting events, etc. If you trash the plist file, it forces Iphoto to generate a new one when it is relaunched, basically restoring factory defaults.

Trash it

• Go to your hard drive > users> your name > library>and open up preferences
• Grab the com.apple.iphoto.plist file and trash it.

Rebuild the Iphoto Library

Method 1
You’ll have to back up and rebuild the Iphoto library.

• hold down command (apple) key + option (alt) keys when you relaunch Ihoto.
• Choose rebuild Iphoto library database from automatic backup.

If that fails:

Method 2

• Go get Iphoto Library Manager

This will create a new library based on your albumdata.xml file. Keep in mind that your slideshows, books or calendars will not be brought back. But your albums and keywords, places, and faces should.

Then of course, you can always try to re-install Iphoto and see if that works!

Iphoto doesn’t have the capability to make panoramic pictures unfortunately. You have to seek out 3rd party applications such as Doubletake. Here is a tutorial that will help you integrate the two.

Starting DoubleTake

To stitch two or more images seamlessly together, wide or tall panorama, drag them onto DoubleTake. This will also work when DoubleTake is in the Dock, or if you drag from Iphoto.
