CUPERTINO, California—May 31, 2010—Apple® today announced that iPad™ sales have topped two million in less than 60 days since its launch on April 3. Apple began shipping iPad in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK this past weekend. iPad will be available in nine more countries in July and additional countries later this year.

“Customers around the world are experiencing the magic of iPad, and seem to be loving it as much as we do,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We appreciate their patience, and are working hard to build enough iPads for everyone.”

iPad allows users to connect with their apps, content and the Internet in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before. Users can browse the web, read and send email, enjoy and share photos, watch HD videos, listen to music, play games, read ebooks and much more, all using iPad’s revolutionary Multi-Touch™ user interface. iPad is 0.5 inches thin and weighs just 1.5 pounds—thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook—and delivers up to 10 hours of battery life.*

Developers have created over 5,000 exciting new apps for iPad that take advantage of its Multi-Touch user interface, large screen and high-quality graphics. iPad will run almost all of the more than 200,000 apps on the App Store, including apps already purchased for your iPhone® or iPod touch®.

*Battery life depends on device settings, usage and other factors. Actual results vary.

Apple ignited the personal computer revolution with the Apple II, then reinvented the personal computer with the Macintosh. Apple continues to lead the industry with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system, and iLife, iWork and professional applications. Apple leads the digital music revolution with its iPods and iTunes online store, has reinvented the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, and has recently introduced its magical iPad which is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices. Read More

In April, Apple launched its “magical and revolutionary” new device, the iPad. Just 28 days later, it seemed the real magic was how Apple sold more than a million devices in that time period. As I write this at the end of May, iPads are in short supply in most Apple stores. Here in the New York City area, I couldn’t find a single iPad 3G, and there were only a few lower-end Wi-Fi models to be found.

Apple’s sales record here is even more impressive if you factor in that iPad is a new class of device, somewhere between the phones and computers that most consumers understand. It’s also a category of device that’s vexed every vendor who’s tried to enter this space over the last decade.

So how did Apple do it? Why did Apple succeed where no one else has and how did they do it so quickly?

The answer is, it took a decade of education and teaching. The key to Apple’s success is that the company often takes the time to explain things to the consumer that no other vendor bothers to do. By keeping a laser focus on key features and introducing them one at a time over a period of years, Apple taught and evangelized everything the consumer needed to know to understand the iPad from day one. Without that foundation, it’s not likely the product would have been nearly the success it has been. READ MORE

Even though macs are known for their stability, sometimes the applications on them are not. Iphoto is no exception and it can be very frustrating when you’re working on something and then FLASH!–It’s gone. Hopefully you don’t lose any data, but what do you do when you can’t get it back up to stay and it keeps crashing? Here are two methods you can try out. Thanks to a knowledgeable user, Terence Devler at an Apple forum.

Trash the Plist File

What is the Plist File?

Every application on your Mac has a plist file. It records certain User choices.Iphoto plist remembers the lcoation of the library, background color, autosplitting events, etc. If you trash the plist file, it forces Iphoto to generate a new one when it is relaunched, basically restoring factory defaults.

Trash it

Go to your hard drive > users> your name > library>and open up preferences

Grab the com.apple.iphoto.plist file and trash it.

Rebuild the Iphoto Library

Method 1
You’ll have to back up and rebuild the Iphoto library.

hold down command (apple) key + option (alt) keys when you relaunch Ihoto.

Choose rebuild Iphoto library database from automatic backup.

If that fails:

Method 2

Go get Iphoto Library Manager

This will create a new library based on your albumdata.xml file. Keep in mind that your slideshows, books or calendars will not be brought back. But your albums and keywords, places, and faces should.

Then of course, you can always try to re-install Iphoto and see if that works!

Before you do any updating to Iphoto 09, make sure you make a backup of all of your files on time machine. For some reason, people were having issues with Faces and Places according to CNET. You can see more of the Faces and Places article here.

If you are creating an Iphoto calendar and want to change the language settings, you’ll have to set them up in System Preferences. (I’m on Leopard OSX)

Open System Preferences

Click on International

Under Formats, Click on Show All Regions

Then select the country of choice

This should change your settings for when you open up Iphoto or other applications. Simply quit Iphoto and re-launch to see the changes.

I decided to write a post about this because one of our readers was getting frustrated with the inability to “customize” Iphoto. It looks like that’s a common problem among Iphoto users. Thank you for bringing this to light. Sometimes being user friendly can also mean frustration for those of you who are little more tech savvy and want control. After searching around other sites for answers – I keep getting the same answer: It can’t be done!! So the solution I found is basically drag your pictures exactly like the layout, in order. It worked for me. You tell me if it does, and if does–that’s great!! If not, you’ll just have to keep experimenting. So here we go. Hopefully I make it clear.

Create a Calendar

Follow the same procedures to get a calendar project started. For this experiment, I chose Modern Lines.

Import Pictures

When Iphoto asks you whether you want to add photos now or later — it’s probably easiest to choose NOW so you don’t have to do much hunting around.

Set Layout

For this experiment, I want the 4 photo layout with 1 horizontal box on top, 1 vertical on bottom and 2 horizontal on the side. I DO NOT want this layout to change—so how do I do it?Basically, Iphoto will arrange the pictures based on what orientation you set it at. So, for example, if I choose all horizontal pictures, you’ll see 4 big squares. So, if you want every page on your calendar to be 4 big squares, make sure you use all horizontal pictures.

Horizontal

Vertical

Iphoto won’t let you put all vertical pictures, what you will get is one large vertical and three horizontal shots. So if anyone finds a workaround for that, please share.

Standard

So you see the other two orientations available. Let’s say you just want the standard 4 layout for crying out loud! You want it on every page. So what do you do? Just select the 4 square layout.

1. Drag a horizontal picture on the top left.

2. Drag a vertical on the square directly below.

3. Drag a horizontal on the top right

4. Finish off by dragging a horizontal directly below that.

I’ve found I could do that in every page without anything getting affected as long as I went in that order. Again, if you find an easier way let us know and also if this doesn’t work for you, let us know as well! Good luck!

Two issues could be responsible:

they misplaced their libraries somewhere in their drive

the files are corrupted

Restoring Iphoto from Time Machine

If for some reason your library is corrupted and you tried the traditional approaches to fixing it (like the suggestion listed below), the library itself may be corrupted. You may have to use Time Machine to restore everything.

First make sure Iphoto is open and up front before opening up Time Machine

Open Iphoto on your desktop then open Time Machine. Find photo in TM backed up Iphoto > Select > Restore.

Restoring Iphoto Library

Command +F to open up the search box

Make sure KIND is selected, then select SYSTEM FILES or OTHER

Search

Finally search for “iPhoto Library” and note it’s location.

Open iPhoto with the options key held, and select the iPhoto library from the location you found.

You just got done shooting your favorite Aunt’s birthday party, taking well over 200 pictures. You come home happily plug your camera into your macbook and wait for the importing to begin….then — an error message pops up saying you have an “unreadable file”.

What do you do? You have several hundred pictures already housed on your Iphoto. You can delete the application and reinstall, but then you’d have to re-import all of those photos.

Here are some things you can try. If none of them work, better get Applecare on the phone!

Solution 1

1. First Close iPhoto
2. Open up Disk Utility -> Verify your hard drive is readable
3. Repair your hard drive
4. Delete /library/preferences/com.apple.preview.plist
5. Delete /library/preferences/com.apple.iphoto.plist
6. Delete /library/preferences/com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist
7. Reboot
8. Import

Solution 2

1. Go to the Pictures folder in your home folder.

2. Right-click (or Command-Click) “IPhoto Library” and choose “Show Package Contents”.

3. Move the contents in “Import” folder to your desktop or other separate folder

Unlock those photos and re-import into Iphoto.

Solution 3

Here is another one suggested by Fat Cat Software, the creators of Iphoto Library Manager.

On some systems, when attempting to use iPhoto Library Manager to copy albums or merge libraries together, iPhoto Library Manager may appear to go through the motions of importing, creating albums, etc., but the photos themselves don’t actually appear in iPhoto. This behavior is often caused by a problem that happens on some systems where iPhoto’s import Applescript command stops working correctly. This command is what iPhoto Library Manager uses to copy photos between libraries and when it fails, this is the result. This problem also affects other apps such as Safari and Mail which use the same command to implement features to import pictures into iPhoto.

To test and see whether this is in fact the source of the problem, go into the Applescript folder in your Applications folder and open the Script Editor application. Once it opens, copy and paste the following script into the editor window:

tell application "iPhoto"
    activate
    import from (choose file)
end tell

Run the script, and it should put up an open dialog that you can use to choose an image file (any image file will do, as long as it’s somewhere outside your iPhoto library folder). If the photo you choose does not appear in the iPhoto library, then the problem is due to this Applescript bug.

This bug is caused by a problem with Apple’s iLife installer when installing a newer version of iPhoto over an existing older version of iPhoto. If you just want to fix it, the fix is to delete your copy of iPhoto and reinstall a fresh copy from your iLife install disc. If you want the nitty gritty details, read on.

The problem occurs when a newer version of iPhoto is installed over a previous install of iPhoto 2. In iPhoto 2, the files that define the Applescripting dictionary for iPhoto (iPhoto.scriptSuite and iPhoto.scriptTerminology) were stored in Contents/Resources/English.lproj within the iPhoto application bundle. However, starting with iPhoto 4, they changed the location of those files so that they now reside in Contents/Resources. However, when you run the installer and install iPhoto 4/5/6 over a previous copy of iPhoto 2, the installer does not delete the previous version of those files, the result being that there are two copies of the scripting terminology present inside the application. iPhoto then goes and loads both of those suites, which end up interfering with each other, in different ways depending on what version of iPhoto you have. To fix the issue, you need to delete the whole app package before reinstalling, to make sure there are no stray files left over afterwards.

Iphoto is so easy to use and it’s great for storing and organizing your photos instantly and efficiently, why do you think I dedicated a site just for Iphoto? As great as Iphoto is , it does have its are downfalls:

slow performance especially if you have large collections of photos

no easy support for multiple libraries

Fortunately there is a solution and it’s called Iphoto Library Manager.

Features of Iphoto Library Manager

Allows you to create multiple libraries in Iphoto as opposed to one

You can check detailed information about your albums

The library can be shared by multiple users on the same computer

Sync multiple libraries with ipod

You can automate photo workflow

Directly import photos into a specific library

You can switch back and forth between libraries

You can copy photos to different libraries and be able to retain the information

You can split a large library into smaller ones

You can merge multiple libraries into one

You can rebuild or extract pictures from corrupted libraries

How it Works

This is the main interface for the Iphoto Library Manager. When you first launch it, you’ll just see the main library. You can also add new libraries which will appear on the left.

Main Interface

Preferences

Importing Photos into other libraries

Quite easy to do this just select from an event an import into your new library

Merging Libraries

Iphoto Library Manager allows you to merge multiple libraries into one. So, let’s say you have three different family reunion albums. You can merge all of those into your “Family Function” Library.

Syncing Photos From Multiple Libraries to Ipod

With multiple libraries, you can only sync one album at at time. You can use Itunes to help you.

Recently Added Features

With Iphoto 9, Iphoto Library works with Faces and Places so that you can make the most of this useful application.
