If you already rushed out to purchase a Magic Trackpad or one of the brand new iMacs Apple announced on Tuesday morning, then it’s time to do the Software Update dance. The company has rolled out a pair of updates for Mac OS X 10.6.4 and Mac OS X 10.6.4 Server installations running on the new desktop models, as well as software updates for those who want to use the Magic Trackpad with their existing Mac.

The Mac OS X 10.6.4 update for the mid-2010 iMac resolves compatibility and performance-related graphics issues, improves compatibility with large-format SDXC memory cards, and adds support for Apple’s new Bluetooth Magic Trackpad. It clocks in at 452.62MB and contains all the same fixes as the Mac OS X 10.6.4 update issued in June. READ MORE

After starting out with a light-hearted YouTube video about “Antennagate” at the Apple press conference going on right now to address the issue (read our livenotes), CEO Steve Jobs came onstage with a mea culpa: “You know . . . we’re not perfect.”

In fact, Apple knew about the issue shortly after the first phones were shipped, and the company has been working on the problem for 22 days. “It doesnt seem like a good thing if you can touch your phone in a certain way and it loses signal,” acknowledges Jobs. In April, Apple launched its “magical and revolutionary” new device, the iPad. Just 28 days later, it seemed the real magic was how Apple sold more than a million devices in that time period. As I write this at the end of May, iPads are in short supply in most Apple stores. Here in the New York City area, I couldn’t find a single iPad 3G, and there were only a few lower-end Wi-Fi models to be found.

Apple’s sales record here is even more impressive if you factor in that iPad is a new class of device, somewhere between the phones and computers that most consumers understand. It’s also a category of device that’s vexed every vendor who’s tried to enter this space over the last decade.

So how did Apple do it? Why did Apple succeed where no one else has and how did they do it so quickly?

The answer is, it took a decade of education and teaching. The key to Apple’s success is that the company often takes the time to explain things to the consumer that no other vendor bothers to do. By keeping a laser focus on key features and introducing them one at a time over a period of years, Apple taught and evangelized everything the consumer needed to know to understand the iPad from day one. So for some reason your hands went crazy and click-happy. They somehow dragged your Iphoto to the trash and deleted it. Oh wait. No, you were trying to play techno-geek and fiddle with your applications and somehow Iphoto is missing. What to do. What to do. Well, if you’re smart — you’ll have the CDs. No wait, but you lost them during the move. So what now? Hopefully you have Time Capsule or some form of backup external drive like My Book or something of the sort. OK, so you don’t. No what? Iphoto 6? I know I know. Who would still have Iphoto 6? Trust me,there are people that do.  I still have Photoshop 5 on my other computer. If ain’t broke don’t fix it right? Anyway, here is a downloadable PDF file that you can use if you’ve somehow inherited this classic program.

Iphoto to SQL

• Creates an SQL dump file of all the metadata files
• Creates scale of images and vignette
• Retrieve pictures and associated metadata in database

Iphoto to SQL creates: title, comments, keywords, stars, date, album file name and picture name.

Here’s a plug-in that’s FREE and you can use to export pictures from Iphoto to Gallery. What is Gallery? It’s a free open-source web-based photo organizer that you can integrate with your personal website or within a community. Here is the link to both.

This was released on December 8. When you start up your MacBook Pro, it might make a bunch of noises. This update eliminates the noise made by the optical disk drive during system startup and wake from sleep on MacBook Pro computers.  When you finish installing, run the software update again and install SuperDrive Firmware Update 3. — which reminds me, I should download it now.

Iphoto Faces ‘09 Tips and Tricks

Applehits has some useful tips for Iphoto ‘09 Faces, especially for those first starting out.

Maclife.com includes more great tips not only for Iphoto but the entire Ilife collection. Here are some of the tips and tricks included in the article.
