Removing duplicates from your Iphoto library

Posted by Rose Broyles On November - 5 - 2009

Imagine iphotoDeskhaving a library of 1000 pictures or more and you never bothered to check for duplicates. It would really be a big pain to go through everything manually to check. Fortunately there are ways to edit your duplicates. The best one that other websites such as TUAW (The Unofficial Apple Weblog) seem to rave about is Duplicate Annhilator.

Duplicate Annihilator

Features

  • Duplicates created by Iphoto or during import are easily found and removed
  • Special algorithms compare images to detect and understand differences.
  • Electronic checksums like MD5 and CRC32 are used to detect duplicates .
  • Duplicates are detected by using file specific meta data such as filename, dimensions, filesize, Exif creation date or date of creation.
  • Duplicates can be deleted upon detection or by marking them with a keyword to make them easily found using Iphoto features like search or smart folders.
  • Iphoto is made slimmer and faster.
  • Only uses standard Apple features and API’s. No hacking nor tampering with iPhoto system files.
  • Free updates!

Basic Steps

I pulled these from the demo video for Duplicate Annhilator. Everything is automated for you so, it’s just a matter of click and wait for Duplicate Annihilator to do its job.

When you launch Duplicate Annhilator you’ll simply press the button “Find and Annihilate Duplicates”

After the search is over, a prompt will ask you to press OK to continue with the final compilation of duplicates

You just type “duplicate” on your search box at the bottom of Iphoto and click enter

All of your duplicates will be collected in an event. Simply select all and move to your Iphoto trash.

Voila! You are done. No complicated code or tedius manual deleting to cause carpel tunnel syndrome.
