What do you do if you have a bunch of old pictures that you would like to back up on an external drive or CD? Do you manually drag them from your Iphoto library one by one? group by group? An article posted in Macworld explains that a Smart Album is the way to go.

Smart Album

  • Select File > New Smart Album
  • Configure  sheet to read Date is Before (whatever date you want it cut off at) ,Iphoto will create a smart album that contains the photos you’ll archive.

Other ways to export

  • Ratings – Assign ratings to a group of photos by pressing Control +click
  • Keywords-Grab groups of photos you want and drag to keyword icon on bottom left of Iphoto window.
  1. If there is no appropriate keyword, , make one by choosing Iphoto > Preferences
  2. Click the Keywords tab
  3. Click Add, and creating an appropriate keyword.

Archive with Image Archiver for Iphoto

If you don’t want to deal with archiving manually, you can always download Image Archiver for Iphoto. by Blue Room Software. Image Archiver is an Iphoto plug-in that lets you export your images to Mac OS X disk images or platform-independent compressed files.
